FIMA Relief Updates FIMA RELIEF UPDATES 5 : SUMATRA EARTHQUAKE Sent: Tuesday, October 20, 2009 4:28 AM Subject: Indonesian earthquake Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu Alaikum! The West Sumatran population of Indonesia
are still reeling under the destruction and devastation caused by the
2 earthquakes that hit the Padang and Padang Pariaman regions of West
Sumatra on 30 September and 1 October respectively. The official death
toll has reached 1,117 with more deaths expected as the more remote
areas report their casualties. With 50% of the health services completely
paralyzed by the earthquakes, health service delivery remains a priority.
A little under 4,000 people were injured during the earthquakes with
50% of these requiring ongoing care and rehabilitation The rest of the
population were affected by URTI'S, skin diseases, GIT disturbances etc. The
medical response teams in the region are exhausted by the emergency needs
of the affected population and are in critical need of support and replacement.
The other priorities include shelter (200,000 households require immediate
shelter), food, water, sanitation and psychosocial support. Dear respected partners, you may participate
in any of the following interventions: medical teams, humanitarian emergency
supplies or cash contributions. Your immediate action is required to
assist this population in completing and sustaining a complete recovery
from the devastating effects of the earthquakes. With the rehabilitation
and reconstruction phases imminent, time is running out for emergency
relief care and support. Your urgent response is welcomed and appreciated.
May you all be richly rewarded and blessed
for your selfless sacrifices and contributions. Jazakumallah Khair Dr Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief FIMA RELIEF UPDATES 4 Sent: Thursday, October 15, 2009 3:49 AM Subject: Indonesian Earthquake West Sumatra Earthquake Appeal Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu Alaikum West Sumatra province of Indonesia was recently struck by an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale killing over a 1000 people with many thousands missing or feared dead, buried under the rubble or landslides. The city of Padang and coastal town of Pariaman were worst affected with over 134,000 homes destroyed or severely damaged in the earthquake. The infrastructure was severely disrupted with electricity only recently re-established and clean drinking water distributed to surrounding villages. Many hospitals and clinics were destroyed in the earthquake with international medical relief teams responding with mobile clinics, commissioning local clinics or distributing first aid kits. These international humanitarian agencies have confirmed the critical shortage of:
YOU, can assist in this worldwide humanitarian relief operation by generously donating to our local relief operation. Your cash contributions can be deposited into our Relief banking account (see details below) to procure these essential emergency relief supplies so desperately needed in West Sumatra. Your contributions may save many lives or alleviate the pain and suffering of the homeless and displaced population of Padang and surrounding villages. We pray for the mercy and protection of our Creator (SWT) and the speedy relief and recovery of the affected population in West Sumatra. Jazakumallah Khair Dr Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief Coordinator Banking details: JORDAN ISLAMIC BANK FIMA RELIEF 3 : SUMATRA EARTHQUAKE Sent: Tuesday, October 06, 2009 2:50 AM Subject: West Sumatra Earthquake IMA Relief Coordinators Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu
Alaikum I trust that you are all healthy and
contented. However, West Sumatra and especially Padang and Periaman
is still reeling under the impact of the recent earthquakes that hit
this province of the Indonesian archipelago. The current death toll
stands at 608 with a further 343 reported missing. However 618 remained
buried under a mudslide following the earthquakes. Officials fear that
a further 3,000 may be buried under the rubble of the ruins. A further
180,000 were displaced from their homes damaged in the earthquake with
3,000 or more injured. Relief teams have confirmed the shortage
of adequate shelter for the displaced, access to drinking water and
medical care as the immediate priorities during this period of the disaster. The
Indonesian government has pledged $10,500,000.00 in emergency relief
for the area with a further $625,000,000.00 in reconstruction of the
area. However, none of these pledges has reached the area as yet. My urgent appeal to all IMA's and associated
Relief NGOs is to accumulate and forward these emergency relief items
(tents, blankets, clothing, drinking water, non-perishable food) to
the IIMA/MERC coordinators represented by Dr. Salamun Sastra, now appointed
local relief coordinator. Do not send medical personnel at this stage
unless invited by the local relief coordinators. If you so wish, cash
contributions and pledges can be deposited into the FIMA Relief Account
(details below). Your assistance, contributions and prayers
will save many lives and relieve the pain and suffering of many more affected
victims and displaced people. Jazakumallah Khair Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief Coordinator Banking details: JORDAN ISLAMIC BANK Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 1:40 PM Subject: Re: Sumatra Earthquake Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu Alaikum. With every day since the earthquake had
hit West Sumatra on Wednesday afternoon, the death toll has steadily
increased (now approx 1,000) with the rescue teams uncovering more bodies
buried in the rubble of collapsed buildings in Padang and Periaman.
These teams have not even reached the villages buried under the collapsed
hills closer to the epicentre of the earthquake. My brothers and sisters,
the devastation is extensive with complete disruption of the infrastructure
of West Sumatra. The local disaster response team has been mobilized
to the affected area and engaged in emergency care and support aided
by their national government's contribution of $10 million. The neighbouring
countries have also responded by sending aid to the region. It is not
clear whether the region requires medical personnel assistance, humanitarian
emergency relief supplies or financial assistance only. I once again
appeal to all our partners in the region to provide us with detailed
assessments of the disaster and the status of the response to the disaster
before mobilizing the FIMA response. We pray for salvation from this disaster
and offer gratitude for the aid and assistance from our partners in
the region. Jazakumallah Khair Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief Coordinator Sent: Friday, October 02, 2009 1:04 PM Subject: Sumatra Earthquake Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu Alaikum. The death toll in the latest earthquakes to hit Western Sumatra has now risen to 467 and many more deaths expected, possibly equaling the death toll of the Jogjakarta earthquake in 2005 (over 5,000 and 200,000 displaced). Many are trapped beneath the rubble or buried in mudslides caused by the heavy rains and floods following the earthquake. This has disrupted the humanitarian aid response of both government and NGOs. It is reported that the infrastructure of Padang and the coastal town Periaman has been severely damaged including roads, telecommunications, electricity supplies. Families, displaced from their damaged homes, are struggling without bare essentials including shelter, sanitation, food, drinking water and medical support. We urgently await the assessment of our partners in the region (Mercy Malaysia, Mer-C Indonesia, IIMA, DWW etc). Meanwhile, could all IMA's start mobilizing their relief efforts with humanitarian aid and medical relief as well as financial assistance to procure supplies locally. Will keep you all updated as information
trickles in. We pray for Allah's (SWT) assistance and protection. Shukran Jazeelan Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief
FIMA UPDATES 10 - Lebanon & Palestine RELIEF 1. FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE The holy month of Ramadhaan is upon us and the plight and suffering of the people of Palestine continues unabated. Alhamdulillah, the 30-day war of Lebanon has ended with much effort required in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the services and infrastructure destroyed in the war. The international community has responded favourably to their needs with commitments pledged to achieve these goals. Our sincere gratitude and appreciation is extended to all those who participated in the joint FIMA/Mercy/IMA Lebanon relief efforts. May you all be rewarded abundantly, Insha'Allah. FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE Dear Dr. Imad, IMA Lebanon Assalaamu Alaikum It has been a little while since our last communication. I trust that you, your family and other members of IMA Lebanon are all in good health and spirit having just emerged from the blessings of the holy month of Ramadhan. May you be rewarded abundantly for all your noble work and effort conducted in Lebanon in relieving the suffering of those affected by the recent invasions. Like most of FIMA relief activities, I do require a detailed report of the relief efforts during this period, your various activities, collaboration with other IMA's and NGO's, assistance received (financial, physical and medical) and a critical appraisal of the overall response. This report serves many functions: recording of the effort, accountability, evaluation and recommendations of improvement for future responses. This report will be discussed at the next FIMA Exco meeting. I invite Bros Aly Mishal and Amin Sinnokrot to do the same. May all your efforts and prayers be accepted and fulfilled, Insha'Allah. Jazakallah Khair. Eid Mubarak Dr. Ashraf Jedaar FIMA Relief Chief Coordinator 4. FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE Dear Prof. Abdul Latif Assalaamu Alaikum Thank you very much for your response to the call for assistance in Sierra Leone. As you may not know, Mercy Malaysia was first approached but was unable to assist and referred the request to us (FIMA) for further attention. The brother is most welcome to visit anyone in Malaysia but there have been similar requests from other parts of Africa with equal urgency i.e. Somalia, Sudan, Senegal and Uganda. In order to address this problem systematically and rationally, I would request the learned brother to provide us with a detailed list/inventory of their requirements which could be added to that of the other African nations. This final list could then be circulated to the entire FIMA network (including Malaysia) for contributions. In addition, it is our mission, Insha'Allah to establish a warehouse of humanitarian and medical relief supplies in Africa for easy distribution to the various organizations in need of this assistance. May Allah reward you with the choicest of blessings for all your efforts and support. Eid Mubarak! Dr. Ashraf Jedaar
FIMA UPDATES 8 - FIMA RELIEF 1. NEWS FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE - SENEGAL CASE Dear Shaykh Cisse Assalaamu Alaikum! Ramadhan Mubarak to you and your family. May Allah guide us to righteousness and forgive our trespasses during this Blessed month. My conversation with Br Khalil earlier today refers. This e-mail serves to open our communications to assist our brothers in Senegal as best as we can. I understand that the learned Shaykh has initiated various community development projects including schools and clinics. I further understand that these projects are in various phases of completion but require considerable assistance in achieving this goal. Please provide us with more detail about these projects and their respective needs. Could you also provide us with a little demographic detail as well i.e. population served, no. of teachers, doctors, nurses, hospitals, economy, infrastructure, services etc. Finally could you provide us with a detailed list of requirements for the smooth functioning of these community clinics: 1. Personnel: availability, medical vs administration vs support services 2. Training requirements: medical and allied medical professionals (nurses, physiotherapists, radiologists, etc) 3. Medical equipment: type, quantity, availability for purchase in country 4. Medical supplies: drugs and surgical supplies 5. Others We (Federation of Islamic Medical Associations) would be honoured to assist you and your community in the noble work that you have performed in Senegal and Africa as a whole. Please make du'a for the success of our various projects serving the needs of our Ummah around the world. Ramadhan Kareem Wassalaam Dr. Ashraf Jedaar Chief FIMA Relief Coordinator 2. FROM IMA MALAYSIA CUCMS CHAPTER ( CYBERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES) Dear Uncle Ashraf, May your many noble works towards relief of our aggrieved ummah in this Blessed month be rewarded handsomely. Our medical school, CUCMS consciously incorporates disaster management and humanitarian relief in her medical curriculum. Our lecturers have brought us on various "relief & humanitarian missions" to inculcate these cherished values of service before self. I also understand that CUCMS will soon appoint an adjunct professor in this sub-speciality of disaster management and humanitarian relief. Back to the FIMA Relief appeal for funds, I have taken the liberty of trying to raise USD 1,000.00 on behalf of IMAM, CUCMS Chapter. I realise it is only a drop in the ocean but I hope it would in a small way reflect our togetherness and fraternity with the universal aspirations of FIMA in her niche of medical humanitaian relief. Salam Ramadhan Husna Medical Student CUCMS
FIMA UPDATES 7 - FIMA RELIEF 1. FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE Assalaamu Alaikum It is so heart-warming and humbling to read of such dedication and compassion in our student chapters, the leaders of tomorrow! FIMA RELIEF would like to invite all the student chapters who have participated in any of our previous camps to equal or better the contribution from IMAM (UK & EIRE) chapters especially IMAKSA (IMA Kingdom Saudi Arabia), IMASA (IMA South Africa), PIMA (Pakistan IMA), SIMA (Sudan IMA), IMA Egypt, Jordan IMA, IMANI (IMA Indonesia), IMAM (IMA Malaysia) or any other chapter. Kindly do not feel pressurized in anyway as this gesture and effort is entirely voluntary. As a suggestion to kick-start the initiative, try approaching the "affluent doctors" in your respective IMAs to donate $50/100 or Euro50/100 each thereby collecting the $1000 or Euro1000 by approaching just 10-20 individuals. Should you require any official letters, myself or our President would readily oblige! Once again, we pray for the choicest blessings and success for all your noble endeavours, Insha'Allah. Keep up the good work! Salaams Dr. Ashraf Jedaar Chief FIMA Relief Coordinator (Editorial comments; Prof. Atallah Al-Ruhaily, Chairman, FIMASAC, kindly inform all the student chapters under your wings of this student chapter initiative) 2. FROM FIMA RELIEF OFFICE Dear Br. Dr. M. Ihsan Assalaamu Alaikum Thank you once again for the generous and most welcome contribution to the relief efforts in Palestine and Jordan. We and the ultimate beneficiaries, the patients in our care, deeply appreciate your compassion and noble efforts. I have no doubt that Dr. Aly Mishal will provide you with the requisite letter. May you be showered with the choicest of blessings and reward, Insha'Allah. Shukran! Ramadhan Kareem Dr. Ashraf Jedaar Chief FIMA Relief Coordinator
FIMA UPDATES 6 - FIMA RELIEF 1. FROM STUDENT CHAPTER, IMA MALAYSIA ( UNITED KINGDOM & IRELAND CHAPTER ) Assalamualaikum wrm wbt I hope everyone is in the best of health and working hard in these last days of ramadhan. I feel called upon to write something upon reading this email from FIMA. Though meant to be directed towards the IMAs all around the world, I think as one of many chapters of IMA Malaysia ( IMAM ), students from IMAM (UK & EIRE) can do something to contribute as well. I realise we already have a lot of activities being planned for the future but I was just wondering if we can incorporate in those plans a side/parallel session to generate money through donations/jumble sale etc. We can decide to reach a certain target e.g. EURO 1,000.00 to be donated from IMAM (UK & EIRE) and work towards it. I spoke to one of the girls about this today and she asked me how are we going to promote this project and package it so that it won't be yet another donation drive for charity? To be honest I'm not sure how but I would welcome anyone with fresh ideas to help in this matter. The bottomline is I sincerely think that we can do something to help with FIMA RELIEF; a little if not much. I've met Dr. Ashraf Jedaar personally in Brunei last summer and I think he works really hard for FIMA RELIEF, which i think is really sad if we do not reciprocate appropriately and generously. Any suggestions, anyone? Wan Norshuhada ROYAL COLLEGE OF SURGEONS IRELAND ( RCSI ) DUBLIN (Editorial comments, Way to go sister ! May Allah bless you and your mates for the kind thoughts which you have scripted so beautifully and sums the true and endearing spirit of Ramadhan al-Mubarak. I apologise in advance for having taken the liberty to share it with the FIMA world, hopefully it would spur our other students, allied health professionals, doctors & IMAs to act similarly in our niche of medical humanitarian relief, which Dr. Ashraf et al has spearheaded so brilliantly) 2. FROM DOCTORS WORLD WIDE (DWW), TURKEY Dear Brother Ali Mishal, Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah.
